City of Troy to Coulton Round

Watch the video of this walk

City of Troy is a turf maze which is a labyrinth made by cutting a path into a level area of short grass, turf or lawn, and is situated beside the road near Dalby on top of the Howardian Hills. Sometimes known as the Skewsby maze because of its proximity to that village, it is the smallest turf maze in Europe. The name Troy has been associated with labyrinths since ancient times. Many turf mazes in England were named Troy Town, The City of Troy, Troy’s Walls or The Walls of Troy maybe because the walls of the city of Troy were constructed in such a confusing and complex way that any enemy who entered them would be unable to find there way out. There are eight surviving turf mazes in England.

We park on the grass verge a little way pass Troy near the beginnings of a wood. We walk down the bridleway opposite, to a wood, and take the path to the right (green Lane) then a right turn to Scackleton Grange and follow the path which turns left then right up the hill then down over the beck and then up the hill to Swathgill. At Swathgill we take the road till you have to turn right through an over grown type of hedge and over the field to Coulton. At Coulton turn left onto the road and walk to the crossroads, then turn left for Easingwold. Carry along the road past Thorn Tree Farm then take a left fork and a little further take the bridalway on the left. Walk straight ahead past the farm, down a steep hill through Mugdale Wood to a farm road, turn right, go over the bridge and turn left which takes you through Mugdale then turn right up the bridleway back to the road where we parked our car.

Fairly moderate walk with two inclines and declines at Mug Dale and Swathgill.

5miles using OS map 300.
